Anthony Joshua’s driver in Nigeria is set to face charges for ‘reckless driving’ following a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of two of the boxer’s close associates. The 47-year-old driver, a key member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, is expected to be formally charged within the next 48 hours, as reported by The Daily Mail.
After being discharged from a hospital in Lagos on New Year’s Eve, the driver was transported to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state, where the fatal crash occurred earlier in the week. He underwent questioning and provided an official statement detailing the events leading up to the accident, which claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, both dear friends of Joshua.
Following his own release from the hospital, Joshua, accompanied by his mother, paid his respects to the deceased at a funeral home before their repatriation to the UK.
According to a police source cited by the Mail, the driver, who sustained minor injuries, was questioned at the state police headquarters and is expected to face charges related to reckless driving. The source mentioned a possible court appearance on Friday, pending the progression of the legal process.
The incident involved Joshua traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The driver of the truck fled the scene and is now wanted by the authorities. Investigations revealed overspeeding on the part of the SUV Joshua was in, with a burst tire leading to loss of control and the subsequent collision with the parked truck.
Eddie Hearn, chairman of Matchroom, Joshua’s promotional company, expressed his condolences for Ghami and Ayodele on social media, mourning the loss of the two men.
