The boxing community is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of 25-year-old Paul McCullagh Junior, who hails from Belfast. McCullagh had a remarkable amateur career, securing the Ulster Elite heavyweight title in 2019 and representing Ireland in an international match against the Netherlands.
With two victories in his professional record, McCullagh, also known as ‘The Irish Drago’, competed for both the St. John Bosco club in West Belfast and his family’s McCullagh’s ABC in Dunmurry.
He was the grandson of the renowned Belfast boxing coach Paul McCullagh, who passed away at the age of 72 in October 2018 after coaching boxing icons like Barry McGuigan and Hugh Russell.
McCullagh’s father, Paul, a former champion amateur boxer and professional referee, continues the family’s boxing legacy. The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) expressed profound sorrow over McCullagh’s untimely demise, highlighting his achievements and contributions to the sport.
Aidan Walsh, a former teammate, and Jonathan O’Brien, his trainer, shared heartfelt tributes, reminiscing about their time with McCullagh. The Belfast boxing community also mourned his loss, emphasizing the impact he had on those around him.
