Anthony Joshua’s driver is facing charges of reckless and dangerous driving following a tragic accident that resulted in the death of two of the boxer’s close associates. Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was behind the wheel of a black Lexus Jeep carrying Joshua, Latif Ayodele, and Sina Ghami when it collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Kayode was released from a Lagos hospital on New Year’s Eve and later transported to Abeokuta for further proceedings.

After being questioned and providing an official statement, Kayode was declared wanted by the police but has now been charged at the Sagamu Magistrate Court. He was granted bail with specific conditions. Prosecutors have leveled four charges against Kayode, including causing death by dangerous driving. The case is set for a hearing on January 20.

Following the accident, Joshua was discharged from the hospital with minor injuries and paid his respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home. Preliminary investigations indicate that the crash was caused by a tire blowout due to speeding. The truck involved has been located and impounded.

Eddie Hearn and other members of the boxing community expressed condolences for the loss of Ghami and Ayodele. Usyk reached out with a touching message, emphasizing their importance as part of Joshua’s team. Mourners left tributes outside Ghami’s gym, expressing the difficulty Joshua may face in returning to the ring after the tragedy.

The fatal incident occurred shortly after Joshua’s fight with Jake Paul, where he secured victory and called for a future showdown with Tyson Fury. Plans for a Joshua-Fury match in 2026 may be delayed due to the recent events in Nigeria. Frank Warren acknowledged that boxing will not be a priority for Joshua in light of the tragedy.
