Snow is expected to return to nearly 100 locations by the end of today, according to the latest update from the Met Office. As temperatures plummet, a cold snap is forecasted to persist over the weekend, affecting regions in England, Wales, and Scotland with Storm Goretti bringing blizzard conditions and strong winds. The Met Office has issued warnings, including two amber alerts, anticipating heavy snowfall in many areas.
The impending storm is likely to disrupt travel on roads, in the air, and on public transport services, with potential power outages posing additional risks. Some communities may face isolation, and mobile phone coverage could be impacted, cautioned the weather agency.
Approximately 96 areas are under snow warnings today, with significant snowfall expected across vast stretches of England and Wales, particularly in the Midlands and Wales where up to 30cm of snow is projected. Exposed areas could experience gusts of up to 90mph, heightening the risk in the south-west.
The ongoing cold spell has already led to the closure of over 1,000 schools nationwide this week, and the arrival of Storm Goretti is anticipated to bring a complex weather event starting from midday Thursday. Additionally, heavy and persistent rain is forecasted to sweep across eastern and northern England from Thursday night into Friday.
The Met Office alerts: “Storm Goretti is likely to bring disruptive heavy snowfall and challenging travel conditions. A deep low-pressure system will traverse the southern UK on Thursday and Friday, bringing a mix of rain, snow, and strong winds.
“Heavy snow is expected over higher ground in south Wales on Thursday, spreading to parts of England and Wales overnight. Accumulations of 5-10 cm are possible, with up to 20 cm in certain locations, especially in elevated areas.
“Strong winds may cause snow drifting, with the system clearing eastwards by Friday. Meteo France has named this system, with the most potent winds predicted over northern France.
“Wintry weather conditions can lead to delays and hazardous driving conditions. To ensure safety for yourself and others, plan your journey, check for delays and road closures, adjust travel plans if needed, allocate extra time for preparation before driving, and have essential items in your vehicle in case of delays.”
