The Met Office has issued amber warnings for Thursday, with rain expected to transition into snow from the south-west. This change in weather is anticipated to create hazardous travel conditions and widespread disruptions.
Snowfall is predicted to start on Thursday evening, initially impacting higher elevations before spreading to lower areas overnight. Accumulations ranging from 10 to 15 centimeters are forecasted across most regions, with up to 20 to 30 centimeters possible on hills above 200 meters, notably in Wales and the Peak District.
The upcoming snowstorm could lead to road closures, stranded vehicles, and disruptions in rail and air services. Certain rural communities may face temporary isolation, along with the risk of power outages and potential disruptions in mobile phone coverage.
Advanced weather projections indicate a second snow front arriving on Saturday, covering a 600-mile span of the UK. Cities such as Dundee, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham, and London are all projected to receive snowfall, with the north-west facing the possibility of up to four inches per hour.
Snow accumulations may reach up to 30 inches (78cm) in the far north of Scotland, 28cm in South Wales, up to 18cm in the Midlands, and around 5cm in London. Some parts of the south-west of England and Wales, as well as select areas of Northern Ireland, are anticipated to have minimal snowfall.
Named by the Met Office and Meteo France, Storm Goretti is expected to bring the strongest winds over northern France. Weather experts highlight uncertainties in the storm’s path, which could affect where the heaviest snowfall occurs, leading to potential updates in warnings.
Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel. For essential journeys, drivers are recommended to use dipped headlights, accelerate gently with low revs, maintain a steady speed, start in second gear to reduce wheel slip, and steer into skids if they happen. Additionally, drivers should use low gears on downhill sections, minimize braking, and keep both hands on the wheel.
Households are advised to prepare for possible power outages by gathering torches, spare batteries, mobile phone chargers, and other essential items. Individuals isolated by snow should stay indoors, maintain consistent heating, dress warmly, prevent frozen pipes by opening cabinet doors, turn off electrical heaters and extinguish fires before bedtime, and ensure pets are kept warm and comfortable.
Residents are encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors, including older individuals, those with underlying health conditions, and people living alone, to offer support with food and medical supplies if needed. If health concerns arise, contacting NHS 111 is recommended, with additional assistance available from the British Red Cross.
Looking ahead, the Met Office predicts a fluctuating period from January 10–19, with the likelihood of more snowfall, particularly in northern highlands, interspersed with frost, wintry showers, and occasional strong winds.
