Influenced by the movie ‘Crocodile Dundee’, an American model named Ginger Meadows was inspired to embark on a journey to explore firsthand the Australian Outback, which tragically ended in a horrifying incident.
Originally from Snowmass Village in Colorado, a renowned ski destination vastly different from the arid terrains of Darwin in the Northern Territory, the 24-year-old set off on March 29, 1987, along with her friend Jane Burchett, to visit the King’s Cascade aboard the luxury boat, Lady G. Following their Australian adventure, the duo had plans to continue their journey to Papua New Guinea. The vessel, under the command of skipper Bruce Fitzpatrick and a small crew, reached the striking waterfall, known for its resident crocodile population.
Despite warnings against entering the water due to the presence of dangerous creatures, Ginger and Jane defied the advice and decided to take a brief swim. As they swam, they were startled to see a four-meter saltwater crocodile approaching them. Cornered against the waterfall, the women found themselves in a perilous situation. Jane recounted the harrowing encounter with the crocodile.
“The crocodile swam towards us with its mouth open. I threw my shoe at it, hitting its head, causing it to close its mouth. With the crocodile blocking our path, Ginger may have thought she could reach the shore to safety,” she narrated. However, Ginger was overpowered by the swift predator and tragically met her demise.
Jane continued, “She released my arm, jumped off the ledge, took a couple of strokes, and the crocodile grabbed her around the waist, pulling her beneath the water. It resurfaced briefly, displaying Ginger before submerging her again.”
The next day, on what would have been her 25th birthday, Ginger’s lifeless body was recovered. Chief Inspector Arnold Davies from the Port of Broome’s regional police station described the retrieval process, stating that a crocodile attempted to breach the body bag during transport, heightening the tension for the crew.
Ginger’s estranged husband, Dwayne McCaulley, flew to identify her remains. Speaking to the media in 2017, Bruce emphasized that Ginger had been cautioned against entering the water due to the crocodile risk. Her tragic death remains a prominent case of crocodile attacks in Australian history. According to data released in 2024 by Charles Darwin University, there were 76 crocodile incidents in the Northern Territory from 1979 to 2022, with a fatality rate of 30%.
