MMA fighter Chi Lewis-Parry takes on the role of an intimidating “alpha zombie” in Danny Boyle’s film series, 28 Years Later. Standing at 6 feet 8 inches and weighing 110 kilograms, Lewis-Parry embodied the character with authenticity, relying on a movement coach to perfect his chilling performance.

For his audition in the 2025 installment of the 28 Days Later franchise alongside Cillian Murphy, Lewis-Parry was tasked with striking fear into Boyle – a challenge he met successfully. His character, known as the “king of the Alphas” or Samson, is often seen ominously lurking on the horizon, ready to track down the uninfected and carry out a gruesome act known as “de-spinning.”

Set in a post-apocalyptic Britain ravaged by the Rage Virus, Samson navigates a world where various new strains of the virus surface. In the 2026 sequel, 28 Years Later – The Bone Temple, the narrative follows Dr. Kelson (played by Ralph Fiennes) as he seeks to restore humanity to the infected through a process of gradual sedation.

In an interview with The Metro, Lewis-Parry shared his interpretation of the infected variants, highlighting how societal roles manifest in their transformed state. He described how the infected, fueled by rage, retain their original traits and characteristics but lose control, drawing parallels to their human selves.

During filming, Lewis-Parry collaborated with Boyle to enhance the portrayal of Samson’s consciousness and ferocity, particularly in the intense train scene of The Bone Temple. The physically demanding role left Lewis-Parry exhausted, requiring assistance off set after a grueling fight sequence with an infected individual.

While addressing concerns about the Alpha Zombie’s appearance, Lewis-Parry clarified that prosthetic coverings were used for modesty reasons, especially considering scenes involving the young actor Alfie Williams. Working closely with movement coach Toby Sedgwick, Lewis-Parry crafted Samson’s distinctive sprint, emphasizing a controlled yet menacing demeanor.

Drawing inspiration from iconic horror figures like Predator and the Wolf Man, Lewis-Parry imbued Samson with predatory instincts and unwavering determination. His performance aimed to convey an unstoppable force driven by a relentless pursuit of his targets.
