Keir Starmer to Address Trump’s Tariff Threats

Published on

Keir Starmer is scheduled to deliver an urgent press briefing at Downing Street today at approximately 9:15 am in response to Donald Trump’s recent threats of imposing tariffs due to his Greenland controversy.

The US President’s erratic behavior included a warning of imposing 10% tariffs on various countries, including the UK, for opposing his desire to acquire Greenland. Trump further threatened to increase tariffs on NATO allies to 25% by June 1 if a deal regarding Greenland is not reached promptly.

In a statement released on Sunday, 10 Downing Street affirmed that the Prime Minister had directly informed President Trump of the inappropriateness of imposing tariffs on NATO nations. Concerns were raised by allies, including the UK, over the potential negative impact on international relations due to the White House’s actions.

A joint statement from the affected countries expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland’s people, emphasizing a united and coordinated response against Trump’s threats.

Some Members of Parliament, such as the Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey, have urged the government to reconsider King’s upcoming state visit to the US should Trump proceed with the tariff threats. Sir Ed emphasized that the UK should not tolerate extortionist behavior from Trump.

Following the escalating tensions, Keir Starmer engaged in discussions with President Trump, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. During these conversations, Starmer reiterated the UK’s stance on Greenland and condemned the imposition of tariffs on allies for pursuing collective security interests.

Over the weekend, Keir Starmer publicly criticized Trump’s actions as “completely wrong,” diverging from his usual diplomatic approach. The Prime Minister’s planned speech focusing on the cost of living in the North West has been postponed, with expectations of addressing the international developments in a press conference from Downing Street. Starmer aims to outline the UK’s strategy for collaboration with allies while emphasizing the protection of national security and living standards.
