The UK’s opposition to Trump’s Greenland plan has led to threats of tariffs on the UK and European allies. The European Union is planning an emergency summit to address this issue.

Trump expressed his disdain for the UK’s decision regarding Diego Garcia, a crucial US military base, accusing the UK of displaying weakness that China and Russia would exploit. He emphasized the importance of the US being seen as strong in international relations. The Chagos Islands, a British territory since 1814, were handed over to Mauritius last year, with the UK retaining control of the military base on Diego Garcia.

European allies have stood by Greenland’s sovereignty, with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stating that the future of Greenland should be determined by its residents and Denmark. Trump reiterated the significance of Greenland for national and global security, threatening tariffs on goods from the UK and other NATO members until a deal is reached for the US to purchase Greenland from Denmark. Trump also hinted at a meeting in Davos to discuss this matter further.
