Danish MEP Tells Trump: “Leave Greenland”

Published on

In a fiery address at the European Parliament, a member strongly rebuked Donald Trump’s proposal to annex Greenland, bluntly telling the President to “leave.” Danish MEP Anders Vistisen made his sentiments crystal clear by starting off with a direct message: “Mr. President, go away.” The chair promptly interrupted him, citing his language as inappropriate for the parliamentary setting. This is not the first instance of Vistisen using such language towards Donald Trump; he initially expressed these sentiments a year ago when Trump first floated the idea of the US taking over Greenland.

This criticism followed a statement by a key Trump supporter who informed UK MPs that he was in London to ease tensions over the issue. However, during his parliamentary speech, Republican Mike Johnson emphasized the importance of a robust America benefiting the global community. Ursula Von Der Leyen, a top EU official, criticized Trump’s tariff threats related to Greenland, labeling them as detrimental to the relationship between long-standing allies.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Von der Leyen questioned Trump’s reliability, especially after his commitment last year not to impose additional tariffs on EU nations. She emphasized the significance of upholding agreements in both politics and business, stressing the importance of trust between friends. Von der Leyen pledged that the EU’s response would be resolute, united, and proportional.

Trump has argued that US control over Greenland is crucial to safeguard against potential threats from China and Russia. He is scheduled to speak at Davos, stating on social media that he had consented to a meeting with various parties there. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent asserted that America’s ties with Europe are exceptionally strong, urging trading partners to remain calm. In contrast, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned of potential future challenges, emphasizing Denmark’s commitment to collaboration over conflict.
