Renowned personality Ben Fogle has raised concerns about the potential for individuals to feel overwhelmed, contemplating a departure from the United Kingdom. Fogle, aged 52, gained prominence through his participation in the groundbreaking BBC reality series Castaway 2000, which placed 36 people on the remote Scottish island of Taransay at the turn of the millennium to assess their ability to achieve self-sufficiency.
Having hosted various television programs like Countryfile and Cash in the Attic, Fogle opened up about a challenging experience in 2023, describing a moment of feeling “overwhelmed” by the “noise and chaos” of social media platforms, leading to anxiety and nervousness, a first in his life. He expressed concern over a prevailing “mental health epidemic” in the country, highlighting the existing stigma surrounding discussions about mental well-being.
Following this personal struggle, Fogle is gearing up to return to TV screens with a show called New Lives in the Wild. The program showcases how adopting an off-grid lifestyle can aid individuals coping with grief, financial struggles, or mental health issues. Reflecting on the negative impact of social media, Fogle warned of the risks posed by the abundance of negativity, hate, and comparison inherent in these platforms.
Despite being an early adopter of social media, Fogle has reduced his usage significantly, opting to spend more time watching TV or listening to podcasts. Contemplating a radical change, he envisions a life off the grid, possibly in Norway or Sweden, where he can immerse himself in nature, engaging in activities like chopping wood, morning swims, and canoeing, with aspirations to learn new skills such as painting or boat construction.
Recognizing the importance of companionship, Fogle acknowledges that his envisioned off-grid life would be incomplete without a loyal canine companion. He fondly recalls his black Labrador Inca, who played a significant role in his life but was sadly euthanized in 2012. Fogle expressed gratitude for Inca’s companionship, attributing much of his success to their partnership.
As Fogle gears up for the return of his show New Lives in the Wild on Channel 5, he continues to advocate for a balanced approach to technology and a deeper connection with nature, emphasizing the benefits of disconnecting from the digital world.
