The UK is bracing for heavy snowfall in two major regions as conflicting weather systems collide, creating a battleground scenario, forecasters report. Atlantic storms moving from the west will clash with persistent high pressure in the north and northeast, leading to significant snowfall in parts of Scotland and northern England by the end of the month.
According to meteorologist Nick Finnis from Netweather, a weather clash is expected across the UK due to a large high-pressure system from Siberia and a series of low-pressure systems from the west. This clash, fueled by a powerful jet stream from North America to Europe, could bring cold air from Scandinavia over the North Sea, resulting in potentially snowy conditions across various regions.
The Met Office also anticipates snow showers as temperatures are set to drop in the coming week. Weather systems moving in from the Atlantic will struggle to advance due to the presence of high pressure in the north and northeast, leading to periods of rain or heavy showers, especially in southern and western areas. Colder conditions are expected, increasing the likelihood of snow showers, particularly in Scotland and northern England.
While temperatures exceeded 10C in some areas on Monday, a significant drop is forecasted across the country, with North Yorkshire expecting temperatures as low as -6C on Wednesday. The following week may also bring easterly winds, adding to the cold feel.
Concerns over flooding persist, with flood warnings in place, particularly in the Southwest of England. The potential for more snow and rain could lead to saturated waterways, with elevated levels observed in rivers like the River Yeo in Dorset and the River Nene east of Peterborough.
