A former military service member is leaving the United States following the detention of her spouse by ICE agents during a green card visa interview. Matheus Silveira, 30, was taken into custody by four ICE agents at the US Citizenship and Immigration Services building in San Diego, California, for overstaying his visa while explaining his green card intentions. Subsequently, he was transferred to an ICE detention center where he remains detained.

Matheus and his 30-year-old wife, Hannah, a combat medic in the US army, have decided to relocate to Brazil in the coming weeks as Matheus received voluntary departure from the US instead of facing deportation. Hannah expressed concerns about the current administration’s policies, labeling America as “broken” and feeling unsafe to stay due to uncertainties about the future political landscape.

The couple’s plans for settling in the US, including purchasing a home and starting a family, were abruptly halted by Matheus’ arrest. Despite following legal advice to pursue a green card application despite his visa expiration, Matheus found himself in detention facing challenges such as inadequate food portions and overcrowded sleeping arrangements.

Due to a prior DUI charge, Matheus was deemed ineligible for bond based on being considered a risk to the community. In light of their experiences, both Hannah and Matheus have opted to leave the US and resettle in Brazil, Matheus’ home country. Hannah lamented the loss of her sense of belonging in the US and expressed uncertainty regarding a potential return, citing a lack of support and a deteriorating environment.

The couple’s decision to depart the US is driven by a sense of disillusionment with the country’s current state and concerns about the future under the existing administration. They are preparing to start anew in Brazil, where they hope to find a more stable and welcoming environment.
