The English Channel witnessed an interception by the Royal Navy of Russian ships recently. UK warships and aircraft were deployed to track Russian vessels in a coordinated effort with NATO allies over a two-day operation.
HMS Mersey and HMS Severn, both based in Portsmouth, were sent alongside a Wildcat helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron to intercept the Russian corvette Boikiy and oil tanker MT General Skobelev as they were heading towards the North Sea. Mersey took over shadowing duties from NATO allies upon the initial interception of the Russian vessels in the Channel after they were monitored through the Bay of Biscay.
The monitoring continued near the Isle of Wight, with Severn and Mersey, along with the Wildcat helicopter, working together closely to observe the group, utilizing advanced sensors to gather crucial information on their movements. Severn maintained surveillance as the Russians proceeded into the North Sea, passing the responsibility for tracking the group to a NATO ally as they continued their journey north.
Minister for the Armed Forces, Al Carns MP, emphasized the importance of such operations in sending a clear message to Russia about the UK’s vigilance. He commended the dedication of the Navy personnel who work tirelessly to ensure the nation’s safety year-round.
Lieutenant Commander Dan Wardle, Commanding Officer of HMS Mersey, praised the readiness and capability of his crew in safeguarding the UK’s maritime interests, highlighting the strong collaboration between sister vessel HMS Severn and other NATO allies.
Lieutenant Commander Ross Gallagher, Senior Observer and Executive Officer of 815 NAS, lauded the high readiness and professionalism demonstrated by the squadron during the operation, emphasizing their ability to deliver precise surveillance and tactical clarity seamlessly alongside HMS Mersey and HMS Severn.
The Russian vessels, returning from a Mediterranean deployment, were closely monitored throughout their voyage by NATO warships. In a separate operation in the Mediterranean, HMS Dagger monitored the movements of the tanker Grinch, boarded by French forces, as part of efforts to track vessels linked to Russia’s shadow fleet.
The Royal Navy routinely tracks and monitors suspected Russian shadow fleet activities near the UK and its waters, sharing this information with allies. Defence Secretary John Healey MP highlighted the government’s commitment to deterring the Russian shadow fleet, confirming UK support for French operations and stressing the importance of collective action with allies to counter illicit activities.
The recent Royal Navy activations follow a previous interception of Russian vessels in the North Sea, demonstrating ongoing efforts to monitor and deter potential threats to UK security.
