Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, has advised residents to evacuate the Ukrainian capital following Russian attacks that caused widespread power outages and heating disruptions. Klitschko expressed concerns about the energy crisis in Kyiv, stating that the situation could worsen. Over 1,900 apartment buildings are still without heating after a series of Russian air strikes on Tuesday night. The impact of the strikes left around 4,000 buildings, including the parliament building, without electricity and heat, affecting nearly half of the city, as confirmed by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In an announcement today, Klitschko recommended that citizens stock up on essentials and consider leaving the city for areas with alternative power and heating options. He assured the establishment of designated safe zones across the city to accommodate individuals overnight if necessary, offering sleeping arrangements, heating devices, food, and hygiene supplies.

The recent assault follows a previous incident on January 9 when heating was just restored in most of the affected buildings. Klitschko mentioned that some structures were still without heating due to infrastructure damage caused by earlier attacks. Moscow has intensified its assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during a particularly harsh winter with temperatures dropping to -10°C.

In another development, Zelensky expressed hope that the trilateral discussions in the United Arab Emirates would be a significant step towards resolving the conflict. The talks involving Ukraine, Russia, and the US will focus on the sensitive issue of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. Zelensky emphasized the importance of addressing the Donbas matter and the need for all sides to agree on a resolution.

The negotiations follow recent meetings between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US envoys, as well as discussions between Zelensky and former US President Trump. While progress is being made, there are still challenges to overcome in ending the conflict in Ukraine.
