Despite Burnham’s undeclared intentions, several MPs are urging Labour’s national executive committee (NEC) not to obstruct his candidacy. Jo White of the Red Wall group emphasized the importance of allowing local input in candidate selection, echoing sentiments against centralized decision-making. Trade union leaders, including Unison’s Andrea Egan and the Fire Brigades Union’s Steve Wright, have similarly voiced support for Burnham’s democratic inclusion as a candidate.

Health Minister Stephen Kinnock commended Burnham’s leadership qualities, noting his effectiveness as Greater Manchester’s mayor. Kinnock emphasized that the selection process would adhere to party regulations and ensure fairness. A Labour source affirmed that no candidates have officially declared interest yet, highlighting the adherence to transparent party procedures in the selection process.
