A woman who managed a retirement home and swindled an 88-year-old resident out of more than £20,000 has been sentenced to jail. Stephanie White, described by investigators as deceitful, convinced the elderly woman that she was assisting with bill payments but instead forged checks to pocket the money. The scheme was uncovered when the victim fell ill and was hospitalized. White, aged 58, embezzled a total of £21,697.79 over a period from April 2022 to October 2023. Evidence found at the scene linked her to diverting some of the stolen funds to her personal beauty business. Initially, White denied any wrongdoing, attributing the money as gifts, loans, or reimbursements for shopping. However, she eventually admitted to fraud by exploiting her position of trust. The victim’s family expressed deep disappointment and betrayal, emphasizing that the stolen funds were meant to secure the elderly woman’s retirement after years of hard work. They highlighted the emotional distress caused and the loss of trust in the caretaker. White received a jail term of two years and ten months for her actions. Detective Constable Vicky Holt condemned White’s actions, stating that she abused her position of trust to exploit and deceive a vulnerable elderly individual for personal financial gain.
