“Anniversary of Ted Bundy’s Electric Chair Execution Sparks Capital Punishment Debate”

Published on

Today commemorates the 37th anniversary of the notorious serial killer Ted Bundy’s demise in the electric chair, joining a list of other perpetrators who met a similar fate.

While some view the act of executing criminals as a form of justice, others raise doubts about the morality of capital punishment, especially when it intervenes before natural causes, like illness or old age, could take their course.

Despite the abolition of the death penalty in Britain in 1965, over 50 countries worldwide, including the United States, India, Japan, and Thailand, continue to legalize executions as of 2026. Conversely, nations such as Brazil only permit capital punishment under extreme circumstances.

Ted Bundy, a well-known serial killer who terrorized women across America in the 1970s, was executed in the electric chair at Florida State Prison on January 24, 1989, maintaining a facade of respectability in society.

Another criminal, Aileen Wuornos, also met her end through lethal injection at Florida State Prison on October 9, 2002. Known as the “Damsel of Death,” Wuornos, a former sex worker, confessed to killing at least six of her male clients for financial gain.

Harvey Glatman, dubbed the “Glamour Girl Slayer” for his sadomasochistic tendencies, was executed in a Californian gas chamber on September 18, 1959, after sexually assaulting, raping, and murdering his victims.

John Wayne Gacy, infamously known as the “Killer Clown” for his heinous crimes of raping and murdering young men and boys, faced the death penalty through lethal injection at Stateville Correctional Centre in Illinois on May 10, 1994.

Similarly, William Bonin, recognized as the “Freeway Killer,” was executed by lethal injection at San Quentin State Prison, California, on February 23, 1996, for preying on young boys and men, committing rape and murder before discarding their bodies along freeways.
