“Controversial Right-Wing Activist Stirs Up Gorton and Denton By-Election”

Reform UK has come under fire for nominating a controversial right-wing activist and GB News commentator as its candidate for the Gorton and Denton by-election. The party introduced Matt Goodwin, a former academic now known for his divisive views, as their contender for the upcoming election on February 26.

During a recent press briefing, Goodwin distanced himself from traditional politics, labeling the by-election as a direct challenge to Keir Starmer and the establishment. However, critics have labeled him a “rent-an-extremist” seeking attention at any cost. Labour officials expressed concerns that Goodwin’s candidacy could exacerbate divisions within the Greater Manchester community.

HOPE not hate, an anti-racism organization, has raised alarms about Goodwin’s extremist views, particularly his views on British identity and Islam. They described Goodwin’s shift from an academic studying far-right extremism to a prominent figure on the radical right as concerning. Joe Mulhall from HNH criticized Goodwin as an “opportunist extremist” more focused on personal gain than community welfare.

Reform UK faced previous backlash for appointing Goodwin as the honorary president of Students4Reform, with the Liberal Democrats condemning his statements questioning the Britishness of ethnic minorities born in the UK. Goodwin’s controversial remarks linking a train stabbing incident to immigration further fueled the controversy.

In response to Goodwin’s selection, Labour’s Lucy Powell emphasized the need to reject divisive politics and prioritize community unity. She urged voters to support Labour to counter Reform’s toxic agenda and safeguard the interests of working-class residents.

Meanwhile, the Green Party condemned Reform’s choice, characterizing the by-election as a battle between hope and hate. They vowed to challenge Reform’s anti-Muslim sentiments and focus on improving living standards by taxing the wealthy.

Goodwin defended his candidacy, portraying himself as a regular taxpayer disillusioned with the current political landscape. He framed the by-election as a verdict on Starmer’s leadership and an opportunity for residents to voice their concerns.

The by-election was triggered by Andrew Gwynne’s resignation due to health issues, with Reform emerging as the main opposition to Labour in the previous election. Andy Burnham’s exclusion from the contest added intrigue, given his rivalry with Starmer. Labour secured a significant victory in 2024, but Reform’s growing influence poses a new challenge in the upcoming by-election.
