A new investigation is underway concerning the death of a three-month-old infant who consumed illicit drugs at his residence in Scotland.
Olly-James Sievwright was exposed to mephedrone, also known as M-CAT, and MDMA, commonly referred to as Ecstasy, on December 22, 2019, at his home in Sandhaven, Aberdeenshire. Tragically, the baby passed away in the hospital due to peritonitis, a severe infection in the abdominal lining.
His mother, Amy Beck, 32, was initially sentenced to seven years in prison in April 2024 but had her term reduced to four years following an appeal by the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh, deeming the original sentence as excessive.
An inquiry is scheduled to commence on March 5 at Peterhead Sheriff Court after the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) filed a First Notice to initiate a Fatal Accident Inquiry court process.
The inquiry aims to uncover the circumstances surrounding Olly-James’ death and assess the quality of care provided by NHS Grampian and Aberdeenshire social work department to Amy Beck and Olly-James, as reported by the Daily Record.
Andy Shanks from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, the authority overseeing death investigations in Scotland, stated, “The Lord Advocate believes that the death of Olly-James Sievewright raises significant public concern warranting a Fatal Accident Inquiry.”
Beck was found guilty at Aberdeen’s High Court for involvement in supplying mephedrone and exposing children, including Olly-James, to harmful drugs. Although initially sentenced to seven years, her term was lessened on appeal.
The court’s decision highlighted that while Beck was engaged in drug distribution, there was no intention to harm children or cause her son’s demise. The judges acknowledged the tragic nature of the case, emphasizing the profound repercussions of abusing controlled substances.
