A man has been arrested on charges of killing four children and concealing their deceased bodies at his residence, all while reportedly socializing with individuals he met on dates.
Wellington Delano Dickens III, a 38-year-old father, was apprehended on October 28 and accused of four counts of first-degree murder. Dickens informed law enforcement that he did not physically harm his children but admitted to excessive punishment. A search warrant disclosed disturbing details in the case, indicating that the father left the bodies of his deceased children to decompose in his car in North Carolina.
Authorities also allege that Dickens invited people he encountered on the Grindr dating app to his home following the alleged murders.
According to search warrants released by WBTV on January 14, Dickens confessed to purchasing body bags from Amazon to place his deceased children in before storing their remains in his car’s trunk. He claimed his vehicle was inoperable and had been reliant on food deliveries. During a search of his residence, law enforcement discovered two phones, one of which did not have the Grindr app installed but contained messages between Dickens and individuals he met through the app, suggesting he hosted them at his house after his children’s deaths.
Police reported that Dickens contacted 911 to report the deaths of his four children. He purportedly mentioned that a one-month-old infant passed away due to illness, with the body allegedly buried on the property, although no remains were found. Dickens further admitted that a five-year-old girl died two months before the emergency call after being disciplined, and her nine-year-old sister perished when her mouth was taped shut following the incident.
The father also claimed that a 10-year-old boy and his 18-year-old stepson died from suspected malnutrition. Their disappearance had not been reported. During the search, authorities found a three-year-old child unharmed at the residence.
State prosecutors announced on December 18 their intention to seek the death penalty for Dickens if he is convicted. Additionally, it was reported that Dickens’ wife, Stephanie Jones, passed away after a miscarriage.
Neighbors, including Josalyn Tabron, expressed shock at the tragic events, noting the lack of detailed information shared by law enforcement regarding the situation.
