Jesy Nelson has criticized Gary Barlow for her “embarrassing” X Factor audition experience. The former Little Mix member, aged 20 at the time, participated in the eighth season of the ITV talent show, where she was deeply upset by Gary’s remarks during the arena auditions.
Despite her efforts to win Gary’s approval, Jesy fell short as he remarked that her performance lacked originality and was too generic. Consequently, he did not advance her to the bootcamp phase, although she garnered support from Destiny’s Child star Kelly Rowland, Louis Walsh, and N-Dubz member Tulisa Contostavlos.
Following her rejection at bootcamp, Jesy joined forces with Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jade Thirlwall, forming the group Little Mix. Under the mentorship of Tulisa, they secured a spot in the live shows and went on to make history as the first girl group to win the ITV series.
Reflecting on the incident 15 years later, Jesy expressed her frustration at Gary for publicly shaming her. She recalled feeling humiliated and wanting to leave the stage after his scathing critique. Despite receiving positive feedback from other judges, Jesy was haunted by Gary’s negative comments, which were prominently highlighted in her mind.
While Jesy questions whether Gary genuinely held those opinions or if they were scripted for television, she acknowledges the impact those words had on her. In her upcoming Amazon Prime documentary, “Life After Little Mix,” she will delve into her X Factor journey and share insights into her path to motherhood after welcoming twins Ocean Jade and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster last year.
On a more somber note, Jesy recently revealed that her daughters have been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a severe muscular disorder affecting various muscle functions. She has been actively advocating for newborn screening for SMA to prevent delayed diagnoses and enable early intervention for affected infants.
