A neighborhood in Liverpool faced a second lockdown within two days as a bomb squad intervention prompted residents to evacuate their residences on Douglas Road in Anfield. The incident unfolded after authorities discovered a suspicious substance during an ongoing investigation, leading to a controlled explosion by an army bomb disposal unit.

The evacuation was initiated following the unearthing of a “suspicious powder” at a residence linked to the investigation, with residents being instructed to vacate Otterspool Promenade for a period exceeding two hours. According to a local neighbor, ten houses on either side of Douglas Road were cleared as a safety measure.

The street had been under police scrutiny since January 8 when law enforcement swarmed a property in the area. Subsequently, the search was connected to a broader inquiry involving George Gordon, 65, who faced charges related to the handling of human remains found in a St Helens flat.

Residents recounted police informing them of an “item of concern” before the evacuations took place. One resident, Andrew Robinson, expressed frustration at the lack of communication and transparency from authorities, highlighting the need for clarity and information dissemination amidst the unfolding events.

A concerned mother whose child attends Anfield Road Primary School expressed unease over the prolonged police presence in the vicinity, noting the impact on her young son witnessing law enforcement activities in hazmat suits.

Merseyside Police confirmed the ongoing evacuation on Douglas Road due to the discovery of additional suspicious substances during the investigation. The area was cordoned off as a precautionary measure, with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team summoned to assess the white powder found at the property. The public was advised to steer clear of the affected area for safety reasons.
