The 79-year-old singer, who had just been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, mistakenly announced the late Luther Vandross as the winner of the Record of the Year award intended for Kendrick Lamar. Cher’s mix-up occurred while presenting the trophy to Kendrick and SZA for their collaboration, which featured a sample from Vandross’ song “If This World Were Mine.”

During the ceremony, Cher exclaimed, “And the Grammy goes to … Oh! They told me it was going to be on a prompter. Oh, the Grammy goes to Luther Vandross. Oh Kendrick, no Kendrick Lamar!” She then quietly apologized as Kendrick and SZA took the stage.

Following the incident, ceremony executives clarified that Cher had been briefed on her role and what was expected. Executive producer Ben Winston mentioned that everything Cher needed to do was clearly outlined in the prompter.

Kendrick Lamar, who had garnered a remarkable nine nominations, expressed his appreciation for the recognition during his acceptance speech. He highlighted the significance of being able to reinterpret Vandross’ work and praised the privilege of putting their own spin on the music.

Apart from his nomination for Record of the Year, Kendrick received nods in various categories such as Album of the Year, Best Rap Album, Song of the Year, and Best Melodic Rap Performance. SZA also earned a nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
