A 13-year-old boy showcased immense bravery by swimming for four hours in shark-infested waters to rescue his mother and siblings after they were swept out to sea.

Austin Appelbee undertook a 2.5-mile swim to shore to seek help when his mother Joanne, brother Beau, and sister Grace found themselves in distress. Initially setting off on an inflatable kayak that started taking on water, Austin later discarded it and removed his life jacket as it hindered his swimming ability. Despite the rough seas and the looming threat of sharks, Austin persevered and reached shore by 6pm, where he promptly raised the alarm.

Reflecting on his harrowing experience, Austin expressed his initial fears and guilt, believing his family might not have survived. Recalling the challenging journey, he described battling massive waves without a life jacket until he finally reached the safety of the shore and collapsed from exhaustion.

The Appelbee family, vacationing from Perth, had encountered unfavorable ocean and wind conditions while using kayaks and paddle boards hired from their hotel. A search operation located Joanne and the two children clinging to a paddleboard, nine miles away from Quindalup in Western Australia state, after spending hours in the water.

Praised by Police Inspector James Bradley for his unwavering determination and courage, Austin’s actions were deemed instrumental in saving his family’s lives. Joanne Appelbee commended her son’s bravery, recounting the difficult decision to send him for help while she stayed with the other children, remaining hopeful until their eventual rescue.

Despite the ordeal leaving the family shaken and cold, with Beau experiencing leg numbness due to the cold, all members were evaluated and thankfully did not require hospitalization.
