Jamie Theakston Beats Cancer: Returns to TV Stronger

Published on

Jamie Theakston provides an update on his battle with stage one laryngeal cancer, 18 months after being diagnosed. The TV presenter disclosed his health condition in September 2024, sharing that he had undergone surgery and was taking a hiatus from his hosting responsibilities for recovery.

Assuring his supporters, the 55-year-old stated during the announcement, “The outlook is very promising, and I’m aiming to return in October.”

The decision to have his throat examined stemmed from concerns raised by colleagues and listeners about alterations in his voice. Subsequent medical assessments revealed a growth on his vocal cords, which was successfully removed through surgery.

In January 2025, he made a triumphant comeback to work, declaring on air that he was now “cancer-free.”

In observance of World Cancer Day, Jamie reflected on his health journey on the Heart Radio Breakfast Show. Recalling his diagnosis in August 2024, he shared that he chose surgery over chemotherapy, leading to the eradication of the cancer after three procedures.

Despite the tradition of ringing a bell to mark the end of chemotherapy or radiotherapy, Jamie explained his situation was different due to opting for surgery. He emphasized the importance of regular check-ups, now scheduled every two months in his second year of monitoring.

During the discussion, co-host Amanda Holden expressed her unease about the ongoing check-ups, which Jamie concurred with, stating his reluctance to celebrate prematurely due to the possibility of the cancer recurring.

Encouraging listeners, Jamie, who lost his mother to breast cancer in 2021, highlighted the fragility of health and urged people not to take it for granted, emphasizing the importance of seeking medical attention for any unusual symptoms.

World Cancer Day serves to raise awareness about cancer and its effects on individuals. The NHS advises individuals to consult a healthcare professional if they notice any abnormal changes in their bodies, as prompt medical intervention can be crucial in detecting and treating cancer.
