A childcare worker, Yizel Juarez, 23, is accused of giving multiple toddlers chewable laxatives, claiming they were candy, in an attempt to send them home. Allegedly overwhelmed, Juarez executed this plan at the day care center where she worked.
The day care’s policy mandates that sick children must be sent home and stay away for 24 hours. Concern arose when a mother noticed her toddler experiencing prolonged stomach issues without a clear explanation.
The affected toddler had been attending the day care since the previous summer when Juarez started her employment there.
Several parents, including the anonymous mother, sought answers as doctors ruled out various illnesses despite the children’s ongoing health problems. Even changing the children’s milk formula did not alleviate the situation.
After multiple complaints, authorities were alerted, leading to Juarez turning herself in to the local police station. She now faces charges related to endangering children’s health and attempted aggravated battery.
Investigations revealed three victims, all toddlers under two years old, who were affected by Juarez’s alleged actions. Parents expressed shock and distress over the incident, highlighting concerns for their children’s safety.
Juarez, who was pursuing early childhood education at Northern Illinois University, has been terminated from her position at The Learning Experience day care center. Authorities urge individuals with additional information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
