A student has shared his experience of taking shelter in a classroom during a tragic shooting incident that resulted in 10 fatalities and numerous injuries in a secluded town in Canada.
Darian Quist, a senior student at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, described arriving at his classroom around 1:30 pm when an alarm sounded, prompting lockdown procedures. Initially unaware of the situation, Darian and his peers eventually realized the severity of the circumstances.
The incident led to the death of 10 individuals and left 25 others wounded. Authorities issued a shelter-in-place alert describing the suspect as a “female in a dress with brown hair.”
Darian recounted using tables to barricade the doors for over two hours while receiving distressing photos on his phone. Eventually, the police arrived to evacuate the students safely. Upon exiting the building, Darian reunited with his mother, Shelley, at a local community center.
Shelley, who was at work during the incident, observed a heavy police presence from her office and was advised against rushing to the school premises. She anxiously monitored the situation and rushed to the community center upon hearing police entering her son’s classroom.
Tragically, six victims were discovered deceased within the school premises, with one individual succumbing en route to the hospital. The suspect was found with self-inflicted injuries at the school. Additionally, two more individuals were found deceased at a nearby residence in an incident believed to be linked to the shootings.
Due to the tragic events, Tumbler Ridge Secondary School will remain closed for the remainder of the week, as announced by School District 59. Support services will be made available, with details to be communicated through social media.
In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences and solidarity with the affected families and the community. He emphasized the resilience and unity displayed by Canadians during challenging times and assured full support to the impacted region.
The Government of Canada stands in solidarity with the residents of British Columbia as they navigate the aftermath of this devastating incident.
