A man has been sentenced to prison after a court revealed that he fatally shook his six-week-old infant son due to frustration over the baby’s crying. Peter Sayle, 32, violently shook his son, Huxley Sayle, to death shortly after the child’s birth at their residence in Fulwood, Preston, Lancashire, according to court testimony. Prior to the tragic incident, Sayle had conducted online searches on his phone about dealing with anger when a baby won’t sleep and feeling upset by a baby’s crying.
During the trial, it was disclosed that Sayle had looked up tips on managing frustration and anger before leaving his son unresponsive with a head injury. Initially denying any involvement in Huxley’s death, Sayle eventually pleaded guilty to manslaughter during his trial at Preston Crown Court and was handed a sentence of nine years and 11 months in prison.
Lancashire Police responded to a call at Squires Wood Fulwood, on June 14, 2022, reporting an unresponsive six-week-old baby with a head injury taken to Royal Preston Hospital. Despite medical efforts, Huxley’s injuries were deemed too severe for treatment and life support was discontinued the same day. Sayle was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 Wounding on June 17, 2022, but insisted that injuries were a result of his attempts at CPR.
Further investigations by medical experts at the children’s hospital revealed severe skull and brain injuries on Huxley, consistent with violent shaking. Postmortem results confirmed the cause of death as a traumatic head injury, ruling out natural causes. Sayle was rearrested on suspicion of murder and denied any wrongdoing, despite evidence suggesting forceful shaking caused the fatal injuries.
In a final court appearance, Sayle admitted to Huxley’s manslaughter. DCI Andy Fallows of the Force Major Investigation Team criticized Sayle for his deceitful actions, emphasizing the tragic consequences of his violence towards the defenseless child. The investigative team’s persistence in seeking justice for Huxley was commended amid the challenging case.
