“Pubs: A Breeding Ground for Business Ideas”

Published on

A recent study suggests that around 20% of individuals have generated a business concept while enjoying a drink at a local pub. Pubs are not only a social gathering spot but also a breeding ground for entrepreneurial ideas that may have been lingering in the minds of patrons.

According to a survey conducted by website creator GoDaddy, 18% of respondents stated that they had conceived a business idea while at a pub, with this number rising to one in three among those under 35 years old. While many ideas remain just that, some individuals have been inspired enough to take action, with over 10% even going as far as registering a website domain after their pub discussions.

Several well-known companies have roots in casual pub conversations. For example, entrepreneur John Roberts kick-started the electrical appliance website AO.com following a £1 bet made in a pub, now holding a stock market value of £570 million. Similarly, travel search giant Skyscanner was born from a pub conversation among co-founder Gareth Williams and two university friends in 2001.

Luke Rees, a 36-year-old from Manchester, launched his hot sauce business, Lou’s Brews, after a pub visit with friends in 2020. Rees credited the pub as the birthplace of his venture, sharing that the social setting and encouragement from friends gave him the push to turn his hobby into a successful career.

Despite pubs being recognized as hubs for innovative ideas, many are facing closures due to rising costs and changing consumer habits. Efforts are being made to support the industry, with Labour announcing plans to assist pubs with business rates, although some critics argue that more action is needed to prevent further closures.

According to GoDaddy’s analysis, retail and online retail businesses were the most common types of ventures conceived in pubs, followed by tech, pet care, and fashion businesses. Some more whimsical ideas that emerged from pub discussions include a talentless dogs’ Crufts, a warehouse park, and everlasting-flavor chewing gum.

Economist Alexandra Rosen, who leads the GoDaddy Small Business Research Lab, emphasized that beyond being social spaces, pubs are increasingly becoming arenas for idea generation and the initial steps towards entrepreneurship.
