Richard E. Grant recently shared the heartfelt promise he made to his late wife Joan during her battle with stage four lung cancer. Joan, a dialect coach, tragically passed away in September 2021 at the age of 74, just eight months after receiving her diagnosis.

The devastating news came shortly after Richard had to cancel their health insurance due to issues with their provider. Despite this setback, Joan received exceptional care from the NHS staff at Royal Marsden Hospital, a fact that Richard has consistently praised.

Honoring Joan’s wish to not die in a hospital setting, she spent only a brief four days at the medical facility before transitioning to receive care at home. Richard recounted how Joan had requested him to ensure she didn’t pass away in a hospital, a promise he kept with the support of the medical team.

Joan underwent a targeted drug treatment for her rare form of lung cancer, avoiding hair loss or traditional chemotherapy. However, after three months, concerns arose about the treatment’s effectiveness, leading to emotional moments with their oncologist at the Marsden Hospital.

In his book, “A Pocketful of Happiness,” Richard shared Joan’s desire for them to hold hands when she passed, a wish that ultimately came true. Reflecting on Joan’s final days, Richard recalled the poignant moment when she expressed her exhaustion from the disease and asked him to let her go.

Years after her passing, Richard continues to grieve, writing nightly letters to Joan to maintain a sense of connection. Their love story began when Richard sought dialect lessons from Joan, leading to a deep bond that culminated in marriage in 1986 and the birth of their daughter, Olivia.

Since Joan’s death, Richard has chosen to remain single, acknowledging the challenges of opening up to another relationship. Despite not actively seeking love, he remains open to the possibility while focusing on treasuring the memories of his time with Joan.
