UK Inflation Drops to 3%, Nears One-Year Low

Published on

UK inflation dropped to a nearly one-year low of 3% in January as the pace of price increases continued to slow. This marks the lowest inflation level since March 2025, down from 3.4% in December, as anticipated by economists.

Although inflation decreased, it doesn’t mean prices have stabilized. They are still increasing, but at a reduced rate. Factors contributing to the decline in inflation include lower petrol and food prices, along with decreased airfares, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Last year, inflation peaked at 3.8%, with a high of 11.1% in October 2022. The Bank of England foresees inflation approaching its 2% target by mid-2026.

The recent inflation figures have raised expectations for a potential interest rate cut in March, with the current base rate at 3.75%. Analysts predict that the deteriorating labor market, weak wages, and economic growth may lead to the first rate cut of 2026 at the next meeting in March.

Lower petrol and food prices were key drivers of the inflation decline. The average petrol price dropped by 3.1p per liter between December 2025 and January 2026. Additionally, food and non-alcoholic drink prices rose by 3.6% in the 12 months to January 2026, down from 4.5% in the previous year.

Core inflation, excluding volatile elements like energy and food, stood at 3.1% in January, slightly lower than December’s 3.2%. The Chancellor emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing the cost of living through various measures.

Grant Fitzner, Chief Economist at the ONS, highlighted that inflation fell to 3% in January due to lower petrol prices, reduced airfares, and lower food prices. The ONS uses a basket of goods and services to calculate inflation, representing consumer spending patterns.

Inflation reflects how prices of goods and services change over time. If inflation is at 3%, an item that cost £1 last year would now cost £1.03. When inflation decreases, it means prices are still rising, but at a slower pace. If prices actually decrease, it would indicate deflation, where inflation drops below 0%.
