Labour leader Keir Starmer has strongly criticized Nigel Farage’s proposal to abolish the Equalities Act, describing it as “alarming” and against British values. Starmer expressed concern that such a move could lead to increased discrimination against women, emphasizing the importance of tolerance and compassion in society.

Reform UK’s new equalities spokeswoman, Suella Braverman, announced plans to repeal the 2010 law, which was enacted during Gordon Brown’s Labour government. In response, Starmer condemned the proposal, highlighting the Act’s role in protecting women’s rights and promoting equality between genders.

During an interview on BBC Breakfast, Starmer voiced his shock at Reform UK’s stance, stressing the significance of upholding principles of gender equality. He emphasized that the Equalities Act has been instrumental in safeguarding basic values and preventing discrimination based on gender.

Braverman argued that scrapping the Equalities Act would shift the focus towards meritocracy and away from tokenism, claiming that the current legislation fosters division and victimhood. However, Starmer pointed out that the Act also provides essential protections against racism and ensures equal treatment regardless of race.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) cautioned against dismantling the Equalities Act, warning that it could legalize discrimination against individuals based on characteristics such as gender, disability, race, pregnancy, or sexual orientation. The Act plays a crucial role in safeguarding citizens from discriminatory practices in various aspects of life.
