“Prince Andrew Island in Canada Set to be Renamed”

Published on

An island named after former Prince Andrew Mountbatten Windsor is slated to undergo a name change in light of his recent arrest on his 66th birthday.

The ex-Duke was taken into custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office and later released pending further investigation, as authorities searched his residences in Norfolk and Windsor. Following the incident, Andrew was stripped of his royal titles and privileges, with discussions underway in Parliament about his removal from the line of royal succession. The small island in Canada, known as ‘Prince Andrew Island,’ situated on the Otonabee River in Ontario beside Gordonstoun Island, which honors Prince Philip, King Charles, and Andrew, is now facing a renaming process.

Mayor Sherry Senis of Selwyn Township, where the islands are situated, confirmed that the council has instructed staff to explore the formal procedures necessary to rename Prince Andrew and Gordonstoun islands. The renaming process is anticipated to take several months and will involve submitting a formal application to the Ontario Geographic Naming Board.

The Curve Lake First Nation, representing the local Ojibwa community, will be consulted on potential new names for the island in the upcoming week. The push for renaming extends beyond just this particular island.

Andrew, who spent six months in Canada in 1977 attending Lakefield College School in Ontario, where he is less than 2km away from the island, has had various roads in Canada named after him. One such road, Prince Andrew Drive in the semi-rural Caledon neighborhood in the Greater Toronto Area, is also under review.

Authorities in the Town of Caledon stated that any reconsideration of the street name would require a formal review process and input from the public, despite community concerns arising from Andrew’s recent arrest.

These developments come after details emerged about Andrew spending a significant portion of his 66th birthday in police custody, a stark contrast to his previous lavish celebrations. He was apprehended at the Sandringham Estate by unmarked police cars and later pictured looking puzzled as he was escorted out of Aylsham Police Investigation Centre.

Reports suggested that Andrew was treated to a single cup of Yorkshire Tea during his time in custody, which was considered a “luxury.” Sources indicated that the officers likely provided him with the premium tea, reflecting his good behavior while in custody.
