Retailers have reported a significant increase in the theft of popular chocolate brands, which are then believed to be resold to support broader criminal activities. Small businesses are facing substantial losses, with some losing hundreds of pounds worth of chocolate stock weekly.
According to the BBC, police have evidence indicating that thieves are now stealing chocolate bars on demand.
Major supermarket chains like Sainsbury’s have taken precautions by securing high-theft items with protective measures. For example, a London branch has safeguarded £2.60 Cadbury Dairy Milk bars in locked containers. Similarly, Tesco and Co-Op have also adopted this practice, requiring customers to seek assistance from staff to access the products.
Store owners, such as Sunita Aggarwal and Paul Cheema, have expressed concerns over the escalating theft of chocolate, attributing it to organized crime activities. They emphasized the growing trend of thieves targeting chocolate products for resale.
Law enforcement agencies have shared videos online showcasing incidents of chocolate theft to raise awareness about the issue. Instances include West Midlands Police releasing CCTV footage of a man stealing trays of chocolate and Wiltshire Police revealing a case where a man dragged an entire shelving unit of chocolate out of a shop.
Cambridgeshire Police highlighted that chocolate is among the high-value items frequently targeted by thieves, along with products like alcohol, meat, and coffee. The theft not only impacts businesses financially but also subjects staff to abuse and intimidation.
Recent data from the TUC indicates a notable increase in chocolate prices, aligning with the heightened theft incidents. The Heart of England Co-Op group disclosed that chocolate theft had cost them £250,000 in the previous year.
Steve Browne, CEO of the Heart of England Co-Op, described chocolate theft as a significant problem, noting that individual thieves could cause substantial financial losses in a short period. He emphasized the urgent need to address the networks involved in reselling stolen goods to combat this criminal activity.
James Lowman, head of the Association of Convenience Stores, highlighted the issue of stolen confectionery being circulated in illicit markets to support broader criminal operations. He stressed the importance of enhanced police support, stricter penalties for repeat offenders, and measures to disrupt the networks engaged in the illegal resale of stolen goods.
