Preparing for their son’s transition to secondary school, Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to provide him with a phone at the age of 11.
Prior to introducing the phone, the couple emphasized the importance of communication amongst themselves and with their son.
Discussing the significance of managing phone usage to ensure safety, Giovanna, aged 40, expressed concerns about the accessibility of inappropriate content and potential impacts on mental health. She stressed the necessity of empowering children through open conversations.
Following the holiday season, numerous children received smartphones as gifts, prompting families to navigate the challenges and benefits associated with this technology.
Over the upcoming year, a campaign named The Family Chat, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, will encourage families to engage in discussions about online devices regardless of their children’s ages.
The campaign aims to highlight available support and resources, such as Tesco Mobile’s age-specific toolkits and guidance for parents and children.
Expressing enthusiasm for the initiative, Giovanna noted the value of filling knowledge gaps to benefit their family. She emphasized the relief provided by Tesco Mobile’s resources and online platform, simplifying the navigation of online safety concerns.
Giovanna and her husband, Tom, a frontman of the band McFly and a children’s author, have two other sons aged seven and nine, who possess tablets for messaging family members, playing online games, and video calling. Giovanna highlighted the tablets as crucial tools for maintaining communication, especially during their parents’ work-related absences.
When their eldest son entered high school, the Fletchers ensured he could contact them by providing him with a restricted smartphone. By setting limitations and linking the device to Tom’s phone, they aimed to emphasize functionality over excessive screen time. The couple maintained an open dialogue with their son, explaining the rationale behind the restrictions.
Giovanna recognized the importance of adults also managing screen time responsibly, emphasizing restricted phone use in specific settings to promote family engagement.
She highlighted the gradual approach to introducing internet access to children, stressing the significance of readiness and staged implementation.
To ensure your child’s online safety, consider the following tips…
1. Establish a child account
Setting up a child account on new devices facilitates parental control management, screen time regulation, and app access monitoring, adaptable as children grow.
2. Provide accurate age information
Entering your child’s real age on their account helps activate appropriate safety settings automatically.
3. Activate safety filters
Ensure safety and search filters are enabled on all search engines to block unsuitable content effectively.
4. Utilize parental controls
Utilize the free support and guidance from our Little Digital Helps Toolkit, customized by age group, to select suitable controls for your family.
5. Sustain ongoing conversations
Regularly discuss online activities and smartphone usage with your child. Meal times provide an excellent opportunity to engage and monitor your child’s digital experiences.
Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasized the importance of promptly setting up a new phone with safety measures, acknowledging the vulnerability of children to online risks during initial usage.
