“Starmer Faces MPs After Mandelson’s Dramatic Arrest”

Published on

Keir Starmer is set to be questioned by Members of Parliament at noon for the first time following the dramatic apprehension of former US ambassador Peter Mandelson.

During Prime Minister’s Questions, Kemi Badenoch and other MPs will interrogate the PM. Just moments before Starmer was scheduled to address the chamber, Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle disclosed to MPs that he informed the police about Lord Mandelson being a potential flight risk, intending to escape to the British Virgin Islands.

This development follows a statement from Lord Mandelson’s legal team, refuting the accusations that he was planning to flee the country. The senior Labour figure was interviewed by police on Monday in connection to allegations of sharing sensitive information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during his tenure as Business Secretary.

Starmer will likely face inquiries regarding his decision to appoint Lord Mandelson to the Washington post despite their association with Epstein. Additionally, the PM may be questioned about the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election, scheduled for the following day, along with significant proposed reforms in the education and justice systems this week.

Lindsay Hoyle acknowledged informing the police about Peter Mandelson’s flight risk and alleged plans to escape to the British Virgin Islands.

The Speaker of the House shared that he passed on the information to the Metropolitan Police in good faith, stating, “I would like to confirm that on receipt of information, that I felt it was relevant to pass this on to the Metropolitan Police in good faith as is my duty and responsibility.”

Lord Mandelson’s legal representatives have disputed the notion that he intended to flee the country, denouncing the arrest as unfounded. Sources close to Mandelson have relayed his denial of any plans to seek refuge in the British Virgin Islands.

The upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election could be a topic of discussion during PMQs.

The Labour Party is embroiled in a tense competition against Reform and the Greens in Gorton and Denton, Greater Manchester. Despite securing a substantial majority of 13,000 votes in 2024, Starmer’s party faces strong challenges from both ends of the political spectrum. Voters will cast their ballots tomorrow to determine the outcome of the contest.

Keir Starmer will be in the spotlight before MPs at noon for the first time since the eventful arrest of former US ambassador Peter Mandelson.

Lord Mandelson was questioned by law enforcement on Monday as part of an investigation into allegations of sharing confidential information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during his tenure as Business Secretary.

The veteran Labour figure criticized Scotland Yard through his legal representatives, asserting that his arrest was spurred by groundless claims of planning to flee the country. Starmer is under scrutiny for his decision to appoint Lord Mandelson to the Washington role despite their connection with Epstein.
