“Headteacher barred from profession over indecent images”

Published on

A headteacher with inappropriate behavior has been permanently barred from the profession following the discovery of disturbing images involving children and animals on his mobile device.

Ian McDonald, aged 46, departed Bishop Martin Primary School in Skelmersdale, West Lancashire, in July 2023. He had been serving as the headteacher since September 2022 but was apprehended in April of the following year by Lancashire Police’s cybercrime unit for creating indecent images of children and possessing an extreme pornographic image.

The school suspended McDonald on April 25, and he tendered his resignation on July 25. He admitted to three counts of producing indecent images of children and one count of possessing an extreme pornographic image, including animals, at his court appearance in Preston Crown Court on June 20, 2024. These offenses occurred between January 2022 and April 2023.

On July 24, 2024, McDonald, residing at Alexandria Drive in St Annes, received a three-year community order with 30 days of rehabilitation as part of an accredited program. Additionally, he was issued a sexual harm prevention order valid for five years.

A former colleague of McDonald, who chose to remain anonymous, disclosed that McDonald departed the school in 2023 and did not return.

In a report from the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) following a virtual hearing, it was stated that there was clear evidence of McDonald’s deliberate actions, as he actively engaged with and stored objectionable images. Despite McDonald expressing remorse and acknowledging the consequences, the report emphasized that this did not lessen the gravity of his offenses.

Decision maker Stuart Blomfield justified the necessity for a prohibition order to maintain public trust in the profession, citing the seriousness of McDonald’s actions involving primary school children and the absence of evidence on the risk of recurrence. Consequently, McDonald is indefinitely prohibited from teaching and barred from working in any educational setting in England.

Mr. Blomfield’s report concluded that McDonald’s teaching privileges would not be reinstated based on the severity of the proven allegations against him.
