Hannah Spencer emerged victorious as the elected Green Party MP representing the Gorton and Denton constituency, dealing a significant blow to both Nigel Farage and Keir Starmer. Labour’s Angeliki Stogia and Reform’s Matt Goodwin, supported by Tommy Robinson, were defeated by the Green Party in the election. Spencer, a 34-year-old plumber and former leader of the Green Party group on Trafford Council, expressed her diverse interests on Instagram.

Following her win in the Gorton and Denton by-election, Hannah Spencer pledged to gain the trust of voters and advocate for working-class communities grappling with financial challenges. In her victory speech, she emphasized the struggles faced by hardworking individuals in affording basic necessities like food, school uniforms, and heating, highlighting the changing landscape where hard work no longer guarantees a comfortable life.

Spencer, who has a background in plumbing and is training to become a plasterer, emphasized her deep connection to the constituency and understanding of local issues. The by-election drew a turnout of 47.62%, with Labour facing defeat in another Westminster by-election since the 2024 general election. The race in Gorton and Denton was closely contested among Reform’s Matt Goodwin, Labour, and the Greens.

An election observer group raised concerns about family voting during the by-election, sparking a dispute over the validity of the claims. While Reform UK member Nadhim Zahawi conceded potential defeat, citing alleged family voting, Manchester City Council refuted the accusations, emphasizing the absence of reported issues during polling hours. The council expressed disappointment in the delayed claims made by the observer group post-election.
