A mother and her daughter created a disturbance during a bachelorette party, assaulting a woman until she lost consciousness and then attempting to attack police officers.

The incident, which involved the smashing of a betting shop window, was captured on CCTV in Newcastle city center, leading to the arrest of Donna Ellis, 38, and her daughter Elisa Smith, 19, as reported in court.

The altercation began on August 10, 2024, when Ellis, celebrating her upcoming marriage, insulted her daughter in a smoking area, sparking a violent confrontation witnessed by onlookers.

The victim, who overheard Ellis’ derogatory remarks, confronted her, leading to a physical altercation. Ellis punched the victim, while Smith joined in by dragging her to the ground and delivering multiple blows until she lost consciousness. The chaos continued as the women engaged in further violence, resulting in the shattering of a betting shop window.

Upon police intervention, both women were apprehended, with Ellis even attempting to assault an officer. The victim sustained fractures to her nose and septum, requiring medical intervention to reset her nose.

In her statement, the victim described suffering from headaches and fear of crowded places following the incident, affecting her job as a mental health support worker. Smith disclosed that her mother often became verbally abusive when intoxicated, leading to the altercation.

Ellis, with a history of 103 prior convictions, and Smith, with no criminal record, both pleaded guilty to assault and affray charges. Ellis received a 29-month prison sentence, while Smith was given a 13-month suspended sentence with 200 hours of community service.

The presiding judge labeled the incident as a “senseless act of violence,” emphasizing the prolonged and brutal nature of the assault. Legal representatives for Ellis expressed regret over her actions, noting that she sustained injuries during the altercation. Smith’s defense highlighted her challenging upbringing despite her qualifications and job stability.
