Amazon Prime’s latest comedy show, Last One Laughing UK, has brought Bob Mortimer into the spotlight for a new audience, many of whom may not know about his past as a solicitor or his involvement in a peculiar incident at the Brit Awards in the 1990s.
In 1996, the band Pulp received four Brit Award nominations but lost to Oasis and Take That in various categories. Despite being set to perform their song “Sorted for E’s & Wizz,” their performance was interrupted by Michael Jackson’s rendition of “Earth Song.”
During Jackson’s performance, accompanied by a Rabbi and children, Pulp’s lead singer Jarvis Cocker unexpectedly rushed the stage, exposed his backside to Jackson, and was later questioned by the police for the act.
Bob Mortimer, a former solicitor turned comedian, assisted Jarvis during the legal proceedings that followed the incident. Recalling the chaotic scene at the Brits, Mortimer shared his experience of trying to gain access to Jarvis, who had been detained by security.
In a podcast interview, Mortimer mentioned the police’s courteous behavior but described the situation as unpleasant, with authorities considering removing Jarvis from the awards ceremony due to the incident.
