A delivery driver, William Backhouse, narrowly escaped harm when his van was struck by a Northern Rail train at Braystone Station in Cumbria. The collision occurred as Backhouse failed to notice the approaching train while crossing the tracks. The impact completely destroyed the front left side of the Ford Transit van and caused debris to scatter across the railway tracks, leading to a temporary closure of the line.

Despite the severity of the crash on September 13 last year, no injuries were reported. Backhouse faced charges for reckless driving and endangering railway passengers. Recently, he was convicted of both offenses at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court and received an eight-month suspended prison sentence, a one-year driving ban, and a requirement to undergo mental health treatment. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £1,500 in compensation.

During the incident, the train was carrying ten passengers, and the driver managed to apply emergency brakes in time to mitigate the impact. British Transport Police emphasized the importance of adhering to safety procedures at level crossings to prevent such incidents in the future. Network Rail expressed concern over the reckless behavior, emphasizing the potential risks and disruptions caused by such actions. Collaborative efforts are ongoing to enhance safety measures at railway crossings to protect passengers and prevent similar incidents.
