Britain has issued a warning of potential military action against Iran and has pledged cooperation with its American partners in the Middle East. This threat comes in response to Iran’s ongoing retaliatory strikes in the Middle East following a joint US-Israeli operation that targeted Tehran with missile attacks.
In a collective statement with France and Germany, the UK indicated its readiness to participate in offensive actions on Iranian territory for the first time. The statement emphasized the intention to safeguard the interests of the UK and its allies in the region by enabling defensive measures to disable Iran’s missile and drone capabilities at their source.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer clarified that the UK was not involved in Operation Epic Fury but acknowledged the presence of British aircraft in the region. The UK officially engaged in the conflict as the Ministry of Defence confirmed that an RAF fighter jet intercepted an Iranian drone en route to Qatar.
Despite mounting pressure to support the US-Israeli offensive, both Mr. Starmer and Defence Secretary John Healey reiterated that the UK was not participating in the strikes on Iran. The UK government disclosed that two Iranian missiles, which may have been intended for UK military bases in Cyprus, missed their targets and landed in the sea.
Iran’s continued attacks in the Middle East targeted US and French military installations and caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure. The leaders of the UK, France, and Germany collectively condemned Iran’s indiscriminate missile assaults on countries in the region, including those not involved in the initial US and Israeli military operations. They called on Iran to cease these attacks immediately to prevent further escalation.
The E3 nations reaffirmed their commitment to defending their interests and those of their allies in the region by potentially taking defensive actions to neutralize Iran’s missile and drone capabilities. Collaboration with the US and other regional allies was also emphasized in addressing the escalating tensions.
