Passengers traveling on easyJet flights from the UK to a popular Mediterranean destination are facing cancellations due to the aftermath of the conflict in the Middle East.
Reports indicate that RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus was targeted by a drone strike, raising concerns about the source of the attack, whether directly from Iran or through Tehran-supported groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon.
In response to the situation, easyJet has announced the cancellation of three return flights between Paphos and Larnaca as a precautionary measure. While flights scheduled for March 3 are currently unaffected, passengers are urged to stay informed by checking for any updates.
The airline’s official statement mentioned that due to the recent events at RAF Akrotiri, the mentioned flights will not operate as planned. Passengers traveling to and from Cyprus in the upcoming days are advised to monitor the flight tracker for the latest information.
To assist affected customers, easyJet is offering rebooking options on alternative airlines, refunds, as well as provisions for accommodation and meals as needed. Ensuring the safety of passengers and crew remains the top priority, with continuous monitoring of the security situation in the region.
Following the drone attack on Akrotiri, which occurred shortly after Sir Keir Starmer’s announcement regarding the use of British bases by American forces for targeting Iranian missile sites, concerns have escalated for the Britons in the affected regions. The Foreign Office is actively engaging with approximately 102,000 registered Britons in these countries, exploring various options, including the possibility of a large-scale evacuation.
Despite the minimal damage caused by the drone strike at Akrotiri, the Ministry of Defence emphasized the safety of personnel and families as a paramount concern. Families residing at RAF Akrotiri are being relocated to alternative accommodations on the island as a precautionary measure, while operations at the base continue to safeguard British interests.
Sir Keir clarified that British forces would not participate directly in the strikes but would allow the use of bases for defensive purposes targeting missile facilities threatening Iran’s neighboring countries. The decision aims to prevent further missile attacks by Iran and protect innocent lives in the region.
