Labour Minister Ashley Dalton Steps Down Due to Breast Cancer

Published on

Labour Minister Ashley Dalton, aged 53, has stepped down from her government role due to her advanced breast cancer diagnosis. Dalton, who acknowledged her incurable condition, expressed the necessity to prioritize managing her health and serving as a constituency MP over her ministerial responsibilities. She highlighted the challenges of chemotherapy side effects and the additional care required for her elderly mother as reasons for her decision.

In a letter addressed to Keir Starmer, Dalton commended the National Cancer Plan’s potential to save lives and enhance the well-being of cancer patients. Reflecting on the significance of supporting individuals with long-term health issues to remain active in the workforce, she emphasized the importance of recognizing everyone’s value in contributing to society, regardless of health challenges.

Acknowledging Dalton’s resignation with sadness, Starmer praised her contributions to the government, particularly her work on the National Cancer Plan. Dalton, in a separate statement, reiterated her commitment to serving her constituents while managing her treatment regimen and family responsibilities, emphasizing the need for balance to ensure effective representation.

Despite her ongoing chemotherapy treatment and stable disease status, Dalton acknowledged the gravity of her condition, noting the incurable nature of metastatic breast cancer. She emphasized her determination to continue fighting the disease and debunked misconceptions about individuals living with cancer, emphasizing the diversity of experiences and choices in managing the illness.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed his admiration for Dalton’s decision and impact, recognizing her resilience and significant achievements during her tenure as a minister. Streeting lauded Dalton for her exceptional dedication and contributions, expressing regret at her departure from the team while acknowledging her continued influence in the healthcare sector.
