Newly elected Green Party Member of Parliament, Hannah Spencer, has officially taken office following a decisive victory in a by-election. Spencer, aged 34 and previously employed as a plumber and plasterer, was sworn in at the House of Commons after securing a win in Gorton and Denton with 14,980 votes, giving her a lead of 4,402 votes.
The Labour Party came in third place, with Reform candidate Matt Goodwin securing second place with 10,578 votes, marking the Greens’ inaugural triumph in a parliamentary by-election. In her winning speech, Spencer humorously mentioned canceling her previous work commitments to assume her new parliamentary duties, emphasizing her commitment to representing individuals in similar job roles.
Before traveling from the North West on Monday morning, Spencer shared with ITV News her pledge to bring a human touch to politics, expressing her dedication to always strive for the best and maintain integrity to make her constituents proud. The by-election outcome has added pressure on Keir Starmer as the constituency was historically a secure Labour seat, with the previous MP Andrew Gwynne winning over 50% of the vote in the 2024 general election.
Gwynne, who faced suspension from the Labour Party due to leaked WhatsApp messages containing derogatory remarks about constituents, resigned in January due to health issues.
