Sir Elton John and his family have been commemorated with a new portrait at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The renowned singer, along with his spouse David Furnish and their children, Zachary (15) and Elijah (13), are depicted in the portrait along with their two labradors.

The portrait, captured at their residence in Old Windsor, was created by photographer Catherine Opie. It will be showcased in the gallery’s Mary Weston Gallery starting from today, marking the commencement of Catherine Opie’s exhibition titled “To Be Seen.”

Expressing their appreciation for the artwork, Sir Elton and David remarked, “Being photographed by Catherine Opie and having our family portrait displayed at the National Portrait Gallery is a significant honor for us. We deeply admire her work and are proud to include her beautiful and evocative images in our collection.”

The couple, who entered into a civil partnership in 2005 before getting married in 2014, welcomed their first son, Zachary, in 2010, followed by Elijah in 2013 through surrogacy.

Catherine Opie also shared her sentiments about the piece, stating, “Photographing Elton, David, Zachary, and Elijah was truly an honor. For me, it symbolizes the essence of what a family can embody.”

Victoria Siddall, the director of the National Portrait Gallery, added, “I am thrilled to include this important portrait of the Furnish-John family by Catherine Opie in our Collection. It not only celebrates Sir Elton John’s remarkable contributions to music but also acknowledges the essential humanitarian and philanthropic efforts he and David have engaged in over the years, alongside the family they have built together.”

Earlier this year, the iconic musician, who has faced various health challenges, shared the story of creating a unique piece of jewelry using some of his bone following a knee operation in 2024.
