“Keep Britain Tidy Launches Great British Spring Clean”

Published on

Every year, over 30 million tonnes of litter are dropped in various locations across the UK. This not only creates an unsightly appearance in our communities but also poses a threat to wildlife and results in an annual cleanup cost of approximately £1 billion.

Fortunately, the environmental organization Keep Britain Tidy is reintroducing its Great British Spring Clean and Great Big School Clean initiatives from March 13-29. Hundreds of thousands of individuals are expected to participate in these events to help beautify our streets.

Since its inception as a one-time event in 2016, a group of dedicated Litter Heroes have demonstrated their commitment to their communities by pledging to collect over 4.5 million bags of litter from streets, parks, fields, riverbanks, and beaches across Britain.

The Great British Spring Clean will run from March 13-29. Participants can sign up on the Keep Britain Tidy website and commit to collecting any number of trash bags of their choice. Registration is open for groups, individuals, and schools, requiring only basic information such as name, email address, postcode, and the number of bags intended for collection.

Last year, nearly 400,000 volunteers engaged in the annual litter pick, filling approximately 462,000 bags of garbage. Feedback from participants indicated that 95% believed their contributions significantly improved their local areas.

Among this year’s advocates is civil servant Emdad Rahman, an esteemed Litter Hero Ambassador sponsored by People’s Postcode Lottery. Emdad leads the Little Litter League, an initiative promoting environmental stewardship among young people and families through regular litter-picking sessions.

Other notable supporters include Sarah Drakes, sustainability manager at Nestlé Confectionery UK&I, and Rob Edwards from KFC UK&I, who have been actively involved in organizing employee clean-up events to maintain the cleanliness of their communities.

The Great British Spring Clean is an opportunity for individuals to make a positive impact in their neighborhoods. With the backing of various sponsors, including People’s Postcode Lottery, KFC UK&I, Mars Wrigley, McDonald’s, Nestlé, Pepsi Max, and Walkers, this initiative aims to empower communities to take action against litter and preserve the environment.
