A mother was found to have baked and sold “space cakes” infused with cannabis through her Instagram account while she was homeschooling her children. Charlotte Owens, aged 37, managed to market the illegal edibles under the name “Spaceicles 420” on her social media platform, offering baked goods containing THC, the active component in cannabis.
Law enforcement officials conducted a raid at Owens’ residence in Aintree, Liverpool, in June 2024 as part of an investigation into a county lines drug trafficking network. During the search, authorities discovered cannabis, confectionery-making equipment, branded stickers labeled “Spaceicles,” and cash amounting to £1,020.
During Owens’ legal proceedings, her defense attorney, Charlotte Bagley, explained that Owens promptly pleaded guilty and took responsibility for operating the Instagram account and engaging in the related activities. Owens expressed remorse for her actions and acknowledged her wrongdoing, citing potential negative effects on her health and her two children, one of whom has cystic fibrosis and requires homeschooling due to Miss Owens’ caregiving role.
As part of her sentence, Owens, who relies on state benefits, was required to complete ten rehabilitation activity days, perform 100 hours of community service, and pay £272 in fines and surcharges. District Judge James Hatton acknowledged Owens’ involvement in the illicit business for financial gain but opted to suspend a custodial sentence considering the impact on her children and the potential for rehabilitation given the circumstances.
