“British Expats in Dubai Warned: Avoid Sharing Explosive Videos”

Published on

British expatriates living in Dubai have been cautioned against a common behavior that could result in imprisonment due to heightened tensions with Iran in the region.

In the aftermath of recent drone and missile attacks carried out by Iran across the Middle East, there has been a surge in videos being shared online by tourists and residents depicting explosions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and neighboring countries. However, engaging in this customary practice, seen worldwide following such incidents, may lead to legal consequences for individuals in Dubai.

The UAE Public Prosecution office issued a warning against the dissemination of unverified information and rumors through social media platforms, citing concerns that it could cause “confusion and threaten the security and stability of society.”

A statement shared on Twitter by the UAE Public Prosecution office emphasized the importance of relying only on official and credible sources for information and cautioned against being swayed by unverified content shared or circulated online.

The UAE does not have explicit protections for freedom of speech, and it is illegal to criticize the government, government officials, or law enforcement. Several individuals have been detained in the past for social media posts critical of the government, including activist Ahmed Mansoor, who received a 10-year prison sentence for his online posts in 2018.

The Gulf States are on high alert following retaliatory drone and missile attacks by Iran in response to airstrikes conducted by the US and Israel. Iran has suffered significant losses in these airstrikes, including the reported killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a strike on a compound in Tehran.

Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu have ordered military actions against Iran citing concerns over the country’s potential nuclear capabilities, despite Trump’s previous claim that Iran’s nuclear program had been destroyed following a bombing campaign the year before.
